We hoped it would be relatively straightforward. We were wrong.
Initially we thought we would have Premika attend the summer session in New Haven and see how it went before applying for a three-year M.Div. program. We did not think that a student visa would be practical until Premika got accepted for the much broader M.Div. program which generally lasts three years.

Berkeley Divinity School’s is the Episcopal Seminary at Yale University in New Haven. At a meeting with Andrew McGowan and Cathy George, Premika was suggested as a promising student from Nepal that might attend the summer study program at YDS.
Premika has since gone on to graduate from NTC as a top student. She was recommended to Yale Divinity School as a promising student from Nepal at a lunch in November 2017 with YDS' Dean Greg Sterling and NTC's founder Reverend Rinzi Lama.
The lunch included Steve Richards from TheoEco, as well as Reverend Lama and his family who were visiting New Haven for the premier of the TheoEco’s The Flourishing Kathmandu Church. YDS’ Dean Greg Sterling had invited all to lunch and the topic of a Nepali student came up and the Dean expressed great interest in having a Nepali student attend YDS at some point in the future. Premika’s name didn’t actually come up at that lunch but afterwards in discussion with Reverends George and McGowan at Berkeley Divinity School, the Episcopal Seminary at Yale. Steve Richards was a former student at BDS and brought the parties together.
As a pastor’s daughter Premika’s time at Yale would give her the chance to meet and see other women priests in the pulpit. Seeing how the Anglican/Episcopal churches in the USA works will impact not just Premika, but also those that interact with her when she returns.
Below is Premike leading a service in Kathmandu. The Anglican church in Nepal is does not include female priests. Unlike the Episcopal Church in the USA who is also a part of the Anglican church
Premika is a young Nepali graduate from the National Theological College in Nepal who has been invited to attend Yale Divinity School’s (YDS) summer session in June 2019. The invitation is offered, accommodations procured, and a ticket at the ready. What’s missing? A visa.
If she gets the visa, we make the film about her journey–if not, we continue to wait. |
